Words and people
How context steers meaning, what a message carries, and what a story says about feelings.
3 questions, each with something to try
How does context change what words mean?
Many words carry more than one meaning, and the words around them settle which one you get. Bank means an edge by a river and a lender with a loan.
What gets through when we send a message?
A message can arrive without its meaning landing. Getting the symbols there is one step. Making sure they were understood is another.
What does a story tell you about someone’s feelings?
A story can name a feeling, hint at one through what someone does, or leave it open. Readers fill in the feelings the words never name.
